Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, at Long Beach in CA. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. While DuVernay grew up within Compton with her family she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish inside the house of one of the jury. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was given and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. From this position she started her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
